Kawasaki Engine Idenitification
Model Code
The model code is the first 6 characters (FH601V) and it is generally located on the engine block or fan shroud. the first two letters(FH) Indicate the series or engine family T or F indicates two stroke (T) or four stroke (F). The numbers 601 indicate the displacement of the engine with the numbers ending in 1 representing a relative displacement. The sixth character (V) indicates the crank shaft orientation (V) vertical and (D) horizontal.
Spec Code
The spec code (AS01) indicates the recipe of parts needed to make that engine, and help to identify what manufacturer that engine was made for and is crucial for parts look up.
What if the tag is missing?
it is possible to find out what engine is on a machine by using the carburetor stamping number. This number is stamped directly onto the carb and identifies the exact carb part number in abbreviated form such as 32349 or 4439B. With a
Five digit format
- Add 1500 to the beginning of the number
- Carb 32349 becomes part number 15003-2349
Four digit followed by a letter
- Add 31 to the beginning of the number
- Add 6100 to the end of the number
- Move the letter to the end
- Carb 4339B becomes part number 314439-6100B

Product Code Numbering Information
| This page will describe how product codes are composed. Product code for 2 & 4-cycle Engine and Power Products consist of 3 segments. The first segment is 6 digits, the second segment is 4 digits, and the third is 2 digits. The third segment can be omitted.
All digits have a meaning – for example this is an Engine product code: |

Capacity Code 2 & 4 cycle engine – Unitized transaxle – Brushcutter – Hand held Edger Hedge trimmer: Capacity code is shown by the blade length in mm. Blower: Capacity code is shown by the maximum air volume in cubic feet / min rounded-up to nearest 100 number. Pump: Capacity code is shown by the discharge port diameter in inches x10 Generator: Capacity code is shown by generator out put in wattage Detail Type Classification Code In the case of 4 cycle engines, PTO shaft configuration is described using the codes in the following table:
Specification Change Control Code In certain design changes which affect the interchangeability, appearance, pricing, etc. this code is changed alphabetically. Main Market Code In the case for the U.S.A. market, the code is S. Specification Code This code is used to identify different specifications of the same model. The differences could be types of control panels, mufflers, starting options etc. Additional Control Code This code is an additional control code for specifications such as packaging. |

Kohler Replacements For Kawasaki Engines
The chat below is a conversation that we have alot about the FC420V and FB460v replacement engines, which Kawasaki does not make anymore and maybe this will help with your questions about these engines.
I have also posted the links to the Kohler replacement engines below.
Click here to See PA-41582 You can also see a line drawing of this engine at the bottom of our web page to see if the oil filter placement will be a problem on your equipment.
Jason: Hello there, I am looking for a price on a FB460v kawasaki motor and a FC420v.
Gary: Hello Jason, What kind of equipment are your working with??
Jason: The FB460V is followed by KS08 meaning it is FB460V – KS08 and the
Jason: walk behind mowers
Gary: what brand mower
Jason: and the other is FC420V-CS07
Jason: Toro 44″ walk behind with electric clutch for the FB460V
Jason: and a kees 36″ walk behind has the FC420V with manual lever clutch
Gary: Most customers buy the Kohler CV15-41582 or the 41583 to replace these engines. (Kawasaki doesn’t make single cylinder engines any more).
Jason: will that motor work on both of them
Gary: The 41582 has the electric clutch alternator but we have had a few problems with interference on the oil filter placement.
Gary: The 41583 has the kawasaki style oil filter placement but doesn’t have the electric clutch alternator.
Gary: The 41582 is cheaper and would work on either if you don’t have any oil filter issues.
Gary: If you pull up the engines online you can see the placement of the filter on the back side near the above deck gear boxes. (that is the problem if we see one.)
Jason: how’s the pricing on it. What we could do is get one here and look at it and see if it would work for the other mower
Gary: free shipping. (UPS typically)
Jason: online on your website?
Gary: yes
Jason: looking

KOHLER PISTON ASSYMBLIES
In 2006 Kohler was having some problems with incidents of smoking on start-up, primarily with Command vertical twin engines, and through research found that oil was settling in the combustion chamber above the piston. This was caused by the oil slots inside the piston being too large, now the pistons have been redesigned to significantly reduce the amount of oil that can collect and get past the ring grooves into the combustion chamber when the engine is shut down.
But that in the new piston poses a new problem. In most cases the Mahle piston cannot be used in place of the old piston without changing to the new style connecting rod as well, with some of these new rods costing around $70. Also, if the rings ever have to be replaced on these Mahle pistons you have to use the new style rings as well.
All of the pistons that we carry in the aftermarket here at TEW are the old style pistons and can be used with the old style rods, and rings. But, we also carry a full line of Kohler piston assymblies so it is crucial to be certain of your engines needs.

I have posted the Kohler Piston Parts Bulletin 246 so that you will be able to identify what pistons that you have and we will be able to find you the right parts for your machinery.
Kohler Command Vertical Shaft Engine Identification
When ordering parts, or in any communications involving an engine, always give the model, specification and serial number of the engine. This is vital in being able to order and receive the correct parts for your application. The engine identification numbers appear on a decal affixed to the engine blower housing.
The image below covers the following models CV17, CV18, CV20, CV22, CV23, CV25, CV26, CV730, CV740, CV750
