Kawasaki Engine Idenitification

Model Code

The model code is the first 6 characters (FH601V) and it is generally located on the engine block or fan shroud. the first two letters(FH) Indicate the series or engine family T or F indicates two stroke (T) or four stroke (F). The numbers 601 indicate the displacement of the engine  with the numbers ending in 1 representing a relative displacement. The sixth character (V) indicates the crank shaft orientation (V) vertical and (D) horizontal.

Spec Code

The spec code (AS01) indicates the recipe of parts needed to make that engine, and help to identify what manufacturer that engine was made for and is crucial for parts look up.

What if the tag is missing?

it is possible to find out what engine is on a machine by using the carburetor stamping number. This number is stamped directly onto the carb and identifies the exact carb part number in abbreviated form such as 32349 or 4439B. With a

  • Add 1500 to the beginning of the number
  • Carb 32349 becomes part number 15003-2349

Four digit followed by a letter

  • Add 31 to the beginning of the number
  • Add 6100 to the end of the number
  • Move the letter to the end
  • Carb 4339B becomes part number 314439-6100B

Capacity Code

2 & 4 cycle engine – Unitized transaxle – Brushcutter – Hand held Edger
Capacity code is shown by piston displacement in cubic cm. In the case of family series design, imaginary displacement is given in accordance with the output. In this case, the imaginary displacement is shown with one, “1” in the last digit.

Hedge trimmer: Capacity code is shown by the blade length in mm.

Blower: Capacity code is shown by the maximum air volume in cubic feet / min rounded-up to nearest 100 number.

Pump: Capacity code is shown by the discharge port diameter in inches x10

Generator: Capacity code is shown by generator out put in wattage


Detail Type Classification Code

In the case of 4 cycle engines, PTO shaft configuration is described using the codes in the following table:

V Vertical Crankshaft PTO
H Horizontal Crankshaft PTO
G Horizontal 1/2 reduction PTO

Specification Change Control Code

In certain design changes which affect the interchangeability, appearance, pricing, etc. this code is changed alphabetically.


Main Market Code

In the case for the U.S.A. market, the code is S.


Specification Code

This code is used to identify different specifications of the same model. The differences could be types of control panels, mufflers, starting options etc.


Additional Control Code

This code is an additional control code for specifications such as packaging.
